Over the years, Gary Wong tried everything to keep Movie Express a competitor. He gave out popcorn and offered two movies for the price of one. Encountering a wayward turkey

I’VE JUST SPENT three days with a horse whisperer. That alone is odd enough turkey— but I’ve now got an irresistible urge to befriend anything with feathers or fur.

Take the gobbler on Scout Drive in Montclair. He’s become quite a celebrity in the neighborhood, stopping motorists on their way to and from Montara Middle School each day.

What a bold bird. He walks right into traffic and starts pecking on bumpers and eating bugs off car headlights. Continue reading

HAPPY WANDERER – FAR AWAY PLACES CLOSE TO HOME

TRAVELING IS GOOD for the soul, albeit not so good for the wallet. But with a cowlittle imagination, you can visit some far off places sans your suitcase and credit cards.

Here are my fave five East Bay getaways:

1. Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve. It’s Ireland without the pubs. The undulating terrain formed by ever-shifting tectonic plates reminds me of the hills south of Dublin in County Wicklow. And while Sibley’s prominent feature is Round Top, the 10 million-year-old volcano, I’m more smitten with the bovine. Continue reading
