Town Crier: Oakland Restaurant Week business booms

MONTCLARION: January 25, 2013

It’s Saturday night, and we’re circling the block like two vultures, looking for a soft place to land. It’s Oakland Restaurant Week and the little “Gourmet Ghetto” — the Glenview — is jumping.

Tough economy? You wouldn’t know it by looking at Oakland’s emerging restaurant scene, where young chefs are clamoring to open new venues for eclectic East Bay diners. Consider the question the server at Hopscotch asked us last Friday just after 4 p.m.: Continue reading →

Happy Wanderer: Oakland Restaurant Week spotlights city’s thriving gourmet scene

HILLS NEWSPAPERS: January 18, 2013

In the anthropology of eating, food is what holds society together. We dine together at the table of life.

Never have I felt this more deeply than at chef Tanya Holland’s Brown Sugar Kitchen new B-Side BBQ. It’s a must-see event that should be on everyone’s wish list or bucket list. Yet you may be thinking, “How can I even get a ticket to this popular event that seemingly sells out a year in advance?’ Continue reading →

Town Crier: Spreading happiness – one bulb at a time

MONTCLARION: Nov 30, 2012

It’s the first weekend of December — time to consider a simple act of giving. I’m talking Christmas lights, here — big blinking bulbs on your bushes and eaves. Get ’em up, and get ’em up now.

Studies show that lights make us happy. Colors stimulate the senses, much like the kaleidoscopes we enjoyed in our youth. Folks who put up lights are also perceived as more generous and connected to their communities. It’s a win-win for everyone, including the electric company. Continue reading →

HILLS NEWSPAPERS: November 21, 2012

Pack up the pinot and the roast turkey sandwiches — it’s a beautiful weekend for leaf peeping. Yes, while most of the country ushers in winter, we’re in full autumn splendor in the Bay Area and beyond in Northern California.

Every fall, travel expert John Poimiroo tracks California’s changing colors on his website, www.californiafallcolor.com. He says the mid-elevations are the best places for crimson and gold this week, including the Bay Area wine regions. Continue reading →
